Dr. Mary Meehan to lead SHU as Interim President
South Orange’s Catholic university names new temporary president of the college
SOUTH ORANGE, NJ – Seton Hall University’s Board of Trustees appointed Dr. Mary Meehan, who spent 13 years as president of Alverno College in Milwaukee, Wis., to serve as the University’s interim president, beginning April 11.
Current President A. Gabriel Esteban announced last month that he would be leaving Seton Hall to go on to serve as DePaul University’s president.
Some background information on Dr. Mary Meehan:
- No stranger to the Seton Hall community; she was a former Executive Vice President for Administration at SHU and university alumna from 2001-2004.
- Meehan earned a bachelor’s degree from SHU in sociology in 1972, master’s degree in rehabilitation counseling from SHU in 1974 and a PhD in education in 2001.
- Has an M.S. in Health Policy and Management from New York Medical College.
- Stepped down as Alverno College president at the end of the 2015/2015 academic year after spending her 11-year tenure at the college.
Meehan was offered the opportunity to serve as interim president and considering her history as part of the SHU community, she said it was a real honor and therefore, could not turn it down.
Although, Dr. Meehan will only be serving as temporary president until most academic contracts last, which typically last a year, and she looks forward to stay through June 30, 2018. Depending on whether or not a permanent president is found, they may start earlier than that.
“I am not a candidate for the permanent position,” she said. “The very nature of an interim presidency is to prepare for the permanent president. I was not seeking another presidency, but am thrilled to be part of this extraordinary university during these exciting days of transition.” (REAL QUOTE).
